CMFT Bike User Group Forum

Welcome to CMFT's Bike User Group forum.  We meet every few of months to discuss cycle-related issues.

Our priority at the moment is the improvement of the current facilities for cyclists.  We want secure cycle storage areas, lockers, showers and changing rooms, across all sites.  This has all been promised as part of CMFT's Green Travel Plan.  If you are a past, present or future cyclist you can sign up to find out what’s happening and to give your opinion. We would welcome information on cycling routes, tips to other cyclists, or anything else you think would be of interest.

Regular Cycle to Work (+ free breakfast): first Wednesday of the Month

Follow on from the success of the Bike to Work Day 2008, we have held monthly cycling to work events event month since October 2008. The rides are on the 1st Wednesday of each month starting from 7 points around Greater Manchester and head into the Higher Education Precinct. The rides are designed to be friendly and to encourage new people to take up cycling, so we tend to take a little longer and use the quieter roads.

Top Tips

  1. Cycle safe, cycle legal
  2. Please pump up your tyres as hard as you can - it will mean you put in less effort when cycling and also helps resist punctures. Bring a spare pump/patches if you have them to hand.
  3. Make sure your brakes are working. If you feel they are a bit loose and you are not sure what to do then get to the ride starting point a few minutes early and ask for help tightening them.
  4. Try and make sure your chain and other moving parts have been lubricated - this will mean you have to do less work!
  5. Ride with a smile!

Critical Commute

On the last Friday of the month at 8am, there are group cycles to Manchester city centre, lead by 'Critical Commute'.

The purpose of Critical Commute is:

  • to make cycling visible to drivers and demonstrate that it's a viable way to get around
  • if  haven't cycled for a while, it's a chance to enjoy safety in numbers and learn from others who have more experience
  • to have fun

It is entirely law abiding and does not attempt to stop or slow down traffic. The starting points are as follows:

  • Chorlton Green (by Horse and Jockey)
  • Levenshulme Station
  • Prestwich, Bury New Road (outside Pizza Express, junction with Scholes Lane/Hilton Lane)
  • Stretford Arndale (outside McDonalds)
  • Withington Library

All rides finish in Manchester city centre at St Peter's Square or Albert Square, and often end with an activity such as handing out leaflets to passers-by
